In Pictures and In Words: Ch. 7 Reflections

I'm linking up again this week with Deedee Wills for Ch. 7 of Katie Wood Ray's In Pictures and In Words.
I've got to tell you that I am really enjoying this book.  It is very well written, presented in an organized way, and easy to follow!

Ch. 7 introduces us to 12 illustration techniques.  I'll spare you the lengthy post and will not go into detail about each technique.  However, I do want to share with you 2 books that I think serve as great examples for a couple of the techniques listed in this chapter.

I love this book! Giraffes Can't Dance is written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees.  Basically it is about Gerald, a giraffe, who finds his own rhythm and learns that he can dance even though he his body is a bit awkward (skinny legs and a long neck).

Here's a page from the story that showcases Katie's Technique #5: Using Scenes to Show Different Actions
Both of these pages show the characters in action, using several small and separate scenes.

I pulled this one off of my daughter's bookshelf this evening.  It's Jan Brett's version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Take a look at this scene.  Look closely, and you will see images along the outside frame of the pages.

Don't you love how Jan Brett is telling you what is happening inside and outside at the same time?  It is easy to miss if you aren't paying close attention to the illustrations.  Katie refers to this as Technique #4: Showing Two Sides of a Physical Space.
Here's another example from this same book:

Can you see Goldilocks sleeping upstairs?

This book study has really helped me gain a better understanding of the role of an illustrator.  It's amazing how differently you can view a book when you focus on the importance of the pictures.  I hope you are gaining a lot from this as well! :) If you haven't ordered a copy of the book yet...I highly recommend it. You can click the link below to order from Amazon.  Then make sure you follow along and join up or share your thoughts in a comment!
